Lung Surgery
The lungs are the organs responsible for adding oxygen to the blood after removing the body’s carbon dioxide (CO2). The lungs are located in the chest and lie on either side of the heart. Your two lungs, which take up most of the space in your chest inside your rib cage, are divided into sections called lobes--three in the right lung and two in the left. Each lobe is made up of spongy pink tissue containing many small breathing passages, called bronchial tubes. Air flows into and out of the lungs through these tubes. Your lungs transfer oxygen to your blood and remove waste gases.
Lung Disease
Severe asthma, lung cancer, emphysema (damage to the millions of tiny air sacs in the lungs due to smoking), and cystic fibrosis (a genetic disorder that causes chronic lung infections) are among the more serious lung diseases or respiratory problems which may require specialized treatment. It is important to diagnose these disorders early in order to treat them more effectively.
Lung surgery involves entering the chest wall to get to the lung. Your surgeon will choose the method that’s best for your condition.
Thoracotomy
This is the name of an operation to explore the lungs by making an opening into the chest between two ribs.
Lobectomy
The lungs are divided into lobes and this operation removes the diseases part of the lung leaving the remaining lobes to expand and fill the space.
Pneumonectomy
This is the removal of a lung. Most people can function well with one lung.
Pleurodesis
A treatment for a collapsed lung where the inner and outer pleural layers are stuck together.
