Admission Information

How to book
Once your pregnancy has been confirmed and you have a confirm appointment with an obstetrician, please contact our maternity bookings officer on 02 8425 3950 for information on booking into the maternity unit. To secure your booking, it is advised you return your booking forms within two weeks of receiving them. For any questions or queries regarding maternity bookings please email matbook.nsp@ramsayhealth.com.au

Private Health Insurance
Contact your private health fund who will confirm your level of cover and advise you if there is an excess or co-payment on your policy.

Previous Medical Treatment
If you have been receiving treatment elsewhere – especially outside Australia – please be sure to advise your specialist.

Preparing for the birth of your baby

Childbirth & Parenting Classes
Here at North Shore Private, we offer a number of programs for parents to be. For more detailed information please see Our Childbirth & Parenting Programs page.

To ensure we have your current medical, surgical, obstetric and family history we require you, to please complete the Maternity  Health History Form. Also, please provide a copy of your antenatal card.

Both forms are to be returned to the Birthing Suite at North Shore Private Hospital. You may either drop by to the Birthing Suite for us to copy your antenatal card or fax it to 02 8425 3979 or NSPbirth@ramsayhealth.com.au.

Interview with a Midwife
If you would like to discuss relevant issues regarding your admission and midwifery care, please contact the Birthing Suite on: 02 8425 3282 for an appointment with a midwife.

What to bring on admission

  • Your antenatal card.
  • Any letter(s) from your doctor.
  • All medications that you are currently taking and a list of your current medications and how often you take them.
  • All X-rays relevant to your condition.
  • Your Medicare card.
  • The consent form relating to caesarean section patients.
  • Comfortable clothes for day wear.
  • Night wear - dressing gown and slippers.
  • Comfortable footwear.
  • Maternity bras.
  • Personal toiletries.
  • Personal items such as sanitary pads and breast pads.
  • Hairdryer.
  • Compact discs and/or iPod for the Birthing Suite.
  • Bedside clock and pen.
  • Clothes for your baby to wear home. (we provide everything for your baby during your stay)

When you arrive at North Shore Private Hospital
Prior to your coming to the hospital, please ensure that you telephone the Birthing Suite staff on 02 8425 3288 to notify them of your imminent arrival. Admittance to North Shore Private Hospital can be gained by using the main entrance, accessed via Westbourne Street from Pacific Highway.

Important information for your stay
Valuables - We encourage you to leave anything of value, such as jewellery, at home. North Shore Private Hospital is unable to accept responsibility for the loss of valuables or money.
Mobile Phones - Mobile phones can interfere with electronic medical equipment so we ask that you consult with ward staff prior to using them within the hospital complex.
Medication - Please bring all current medications with you. These will be locked in your bedside cabinet during your stay for your personal use.
Smoke-Free Environment - We ask all patients and visitors to respect our smoke-free policy whilst within the hospital complex and grounds.

Postnatal care - helping you care for your baby
During your stay you will be guided by our midwives in baby bathing, dressing and settling techniques. Midwives will assist and support you in establishing the feeding method of your choice for your baby. Extra support is also provided by our lactation specialists.

We recognise that your family and friends are very excited about the new arrival and they provide valuable support for you and your partner. Our visiting hours are between 11am 12, 3pm-5pm and 6pm -8pm. We ask that you inform your visitors of these times and encourage them to visit during these times as you will want to attend education classes, establish feeding and rest.

Overnight accommodation is not available in the postnatal ward for partners.

Rest period 1.00pm - 3.00pm. This enables new mums to have a quiet time during the early afternoon. Siblings are not permitted in the ward during rest period. Our visitor lounge is available for all visitors out of visiting hours.

Discharge day for a vaginal birth follows the fourth night; for a caesarean section birth following the fifth night.

Special Care Nursery
North Shore Private Hospital provides you with the reassurance that should your baby require intensive care support, a specially equipped Special Care Nursery is available. In the event of a baby being born prematurely or very ill, transfer to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit can be effected without delay. Please contact your health fund provider to confirm your level of cover for your baby if the Special Care Nursery is required during your admission.

North Shore Private Hospital offers personalised services including  massage  and photography services. This information is available to you during your stay.

To celebrate your family’s new addition, our chef has created our celebration menu and we invite your partner or guest to join you for a specially prepared dinner for two.
