North Shore Private Hospital specialist MELISSA DOOHAN

Dr Melissa Doohan is a Cardiologist who has been consulting on Sydney's North Shore since the early 1990s.

Training and experience

Dr Doohan undertook Medical training at the University of Sydney, graduating with Honours in 1985. She proceeded to train as a Physician at Royal North Shore Hospital and its secondment hospitals, including Mona Vale, Manly and Port Macquarie Hospitals. Subsequently she undertook Advanced Training in Cardiology, also principally at Royal North Shore Hospital, qualifying as a specialist Cardiologist in 1992.

Dr Doohan spent 3 years in laboratory research in the field of cardiac cellular electrophysiology and was awarded a PhD for research in the field of hormonal regulation of cardiac cell membrane transport. She was also awarded the prestigious Ralph reader Prize for a section of this work in 1993.

She is interested in the full spectrum of adult cardiology, from prevention, to diagnosis and treatment, and through to long term comprehensive management. Many of the patients that consulted her in the early 1990s are still under her care.

Dr Doohan has an interest in Heart Disease in women. As the first female to have completed cardiac training at RNSH she has endeavoured to help bring heart disease in women the recognition it deserves so that women are aware that the problem is prevalent, can manage their risks, and can hopefully achieve earlier diagnosis and more effective treatments.

Apart from clinical consulting these days Dr Doohan is involved in some clinical research in cardiology and she also enjoys teaching medical students at the University of Sydney Clinical School at the Sydney Adventist Hospital. Dr Doohan undertakes cardiology clinics in remote regions through the Poche Centre for Indigenous Health.
